This free web based program is designed to aid in the creation of routecards for hikers of any type, being in Scouting, Guiding, DofE or general use. It allows you to calculate the fields that normally would take a long time to calculate by hand. You can create multiple routecards which can be saved and then edited in the future, as well as having printer friendly versions for use on hikes.
RouteHiker is still being developed, and now incorporates features such as mobile phone browsing, which allow a user to edit their routecards whilst they are away from their computer on a hike. RouteHiker also boasts an API, which allows you to connect your website to RouteHiker, and get animated maps, routecards etc in real-time. Any additional ideas will be welcomed.
The project was designed by WebServ UK employees over a span of 10 months, most of which are in some way involved in the Scout Association. This shows WebServ UK really do care, and it's not all about the money as they're willing to run community projects over a large span of time.
One of our employees, Richard Willars, helps run an organisation called 'Escouts', who provide free hosting for Scouting groups, as well as running an online community. Originally developed for Escouts, the project is known as 'Route Hiker', and has already had articles written about it on major websites as well as in magazines such as the official Scouting magazine 'Scouting', and is set to become a national resource later this year as the hiking season approaches.
As well as still maintaining and developing the project, WebServ UK also provides the domains and hosting for the site, which sits on a Dual Opteron server to give users the best experience the application can offer.
Anyone is free to sign up to the project and use it for their own resources at http://www.routehiker.org.uk/register.php
